The artstyle and music are genuinely fantastic, but that’s all there really is going for Windbound, its a mish-mash of genres, none of which come together to make a game worth your time. I’m sure you can stretch the game out for a few more hours if you really wanted to get stuck in with the crafting (not sure why you would want to though) but 40 hours? No chance.įor the asking price, there is very little for me to recommend here. The main story takes 7-8 hours, at a push, and that was with me really taking my time. I saw a comment left by the publisher that stated that the game has over 40 hours of content, this is not the case, I’m sorry. Button press to proceed and you may die as a result of gimmicks that you’ll avoid on your next run (reminder, rogue like death). The enemies aren’t particularly interesting. The result is an unpleasant travelling mechanic which is otherwise a pleasure to look at on the screen.Ĭombat! I’ve addressed this later because well there really isn’t much to it. I have been squished three times by Korr now, and that's enough. However, with the Forsaken update, now it is. Windbound was not that sort of game, which is something I liked about it. Unfortunately it just doesn’t feel quite right and without a windsong you’ll find yourself travelling slowly and against the wind in most cases. I don't have the skill or interest in fighting boss fights. I’m sure you all remember those days well. Sailing mechanics! Oh boy I just wanted to travel the seas like I did in windwaker. My view is because of the low amount of content, which I’ll touch on below. The game isn’t particularly re-playable and there’s no incentive to continue once completing the title, so why the developers choose to make you grind through crafting and level development is beyond me. There is also a rogue-lite death system which really seems out of place here. There is a crafting system but it does not really add anything that you want or need to craft. For example, your player (Kara) is hungry constantly and you are constantly having to keep her hunger bar in check. Windbound contains survival mechanics that feel like more of a burden than an actual mechanic. The result is a tranquil playing experience that is hindered by the gameplay. There are frame-drops in some areas but the game is generally stable in both handheld and docked. The story is OK - it’s not ground breaking or particularly memorable. Windbound is a grind, attempts to be too many things at once, and isn’t good at any of them. I don’t say this lightly - I have been really looking forward to this title.
